Meet Fernie Chamber Member Muisca Trading Company . They import specialty Colombian coffee directly from farmers in Colombia, already roasted in origen by experts in our caficulture. They have been in business since July 6, 2020 (Happy 1 year Anniversary!).

Q: What’s one thing – industry related or not – you learned in the last month?

A: I  spent time with my farmers in Colombia and have learned how hard they work to produce an excellent coffee bean. Their lives are not easy, and I support them directly with my business. 

Q: What do you love most about your industry?

A: The people who I work with and the love and passion for coffee culture.

Q: What is one thing people may not know about your business?

A:  People may not know that I work to help my farmers get paid a good price for their coffee and help their families and communities.  Many people do not know that our coffee has procedures in place to make a better quality product. Growing coffee is hard work and the farmers don’t get paid much for it; there are lots of social problems within the farming communities and  the younger generations do not want to grow coffee anymore because the pay is too low to survive. My goal is to change that and see them succeed and for the younger generation to learn to farm coffee for a brighter future.

Q: How do you define success?

A: Success to me means seeing the lives of my coffee farmers improve, while providing you with a great coffee bean. I am working with my farmers to build the infrastructure which will support their communities and families.

Q: What are you most excited about in the future?

A: To grow our business within Canada and North America and to teach everyone about the importance of buying coffee directly from farmers. This model puts money back into the farmer’s communities to support programs to help the children in the farming areas, social systems, and minorities who have very little.  Lots to do, but that’s what makes me excited and to work hard everyday. Without these people, we would not be able to have this precious drink as part of our lives. I’m also excited to bring people to my country for coffee tours, and promote tourism around this amazing area.
